第一部分: 朋友间的对话
Two friends, Toby and Chris, are planning to take a gap year. They have gathered a lot of information about voluntary projects overseas for students, and they are telling their tutor group about what they have learned.
Professor Rathmell: … so today Toby and Chris are going to share with us some of what they have found out about volunteering around the world. Over to you two.
Chris:Thanks professor Rathmell.
Toby:Yeah, thanks. Well, the first thing is, there really are a lot of different projects you can get involved in if you want to take a break from your studies and do something useful with your time.
Chris:That's right, there's so much out there if you are prepared to rough it and put in a bit of work. One of the key things is, you don't have to sign up for a whole year. Most of the projects we found out about last from one to nine months. So you can help people in some of the world's poorest communities and then spend some time travelling around their amazing countries.
Toby:Er,… yeah. There are projects all around the world, South America, Micronesia, Latin America, but we have concentrated on Sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia as that's where we're thinking of exploring.
Chris:The first project we looked at is in Laos, The Village Irrigation Project. Volunteers will be helping local villagers to rebuild irrigation channels that were damaged in recent floods. It's an eight-week programme. You'll be living with the villagers, and all your expenses will be paid for by the organisation, so you just need to pay for your flight ticket. Other than that, it's free. But it's physically demanding work, so you need to be quite strong.
Rathmell: Do you need to speak the local language?
Chris:Hang on, er…., here it is. "Translators will accompany the volunteers". Nah, you don't.
Rathmell: A relief, I'm sure, to anyone whose Laotian language skills are a bit rusty.(Loud laughter from group)
Toby:(Laughing) Yes, quite. That's us. OK. The next one is a very exciting opportunity supporting vital research into marine habitats in Mozambique, the East Africa Shark Conservation Project. Not only will you be supporting essential conservation work, you will also have the opportunity to swim with whale sharks, manta rays and turtles.
Chris:Because of the nature of the work, they are only looking for people who already have a diving licence. And this one is not cheap. The project doesn't receive government funding, so participants have to pay around £2,200 to do a 3 month stint.
Toby:There's another interesting opportunity in Africa, the Malawi Orphans Project, teaching English to orphans in one of Africa's poorest countries. It's a great opportunity to learn how rural communities live. It's a six month work placement, so if you take a year off you will plenty of time to explore southern Africa.
Professor:Do you have to pay to join this project?
Chris:It's supported by the World Orphan Fund, and they provide basic food and accommodation while you are there. But they are desperately short of money, so participants are urged to make a £800 contribution.
Toby:Right, moving on, Thailand! Lots going on here, er…
